Buying a bed is an investment in your health. Since we spend about a third of our lives asleep, getting the foundation right is essential. Here is what you need to look for before you hit "buy."

1. Bed Frame vs. Divan

  • Bed Frames: Usually made of wood or metal, these offer a more decorative look. They often have space underneath for storage boxes.

  • Divan Beds: These are upholstered bases that sit flush with the mattress. They are excellent space-savers and often come with built-in drawers or "Ottoman" lift-up storage.

2. Check Your Support (The Slats)

The base of your bed affects how your mattress feels:

  • Solid Slats: These are rigid and provide a firmer feel to the mattress.

  • Sprung Slats: These are curved upwards and act like a spring, providing a slightly softer, more cushioned feel and extending the life of your mattress.

3. Storage Solutions

If your bedroom is small, your bed should work harder for you.

  • Drawers: Best for everyday items like clothes.

  • Ottomans: The entire base lifts up, providing massive storage for bulky items like winter duvets and suitcases.

4. Headboard Style

A headboard isn't just for looks; it’s for comfort. If you like to sit up and read or watch TV, an upholstered headboard provides a soft backrest. If you prefer a minimalist look, a metal or wooden spindle headboard creates a sense of space.

5. Delivery & Assembly

Don't forget the logistics! Measure your doorways, hallways, and stairs. If you have a narrow staircase, a Divan (which usually comes in two halves) or a Flat-pack Bed Frame might be easier to navigate than a large, pre-assembled frame.
